ICB in Self Assessment

Hi!

I have read a recent post regarding the ICB Diploma in self assessment, I have contacted the HMRC regarding a self study book that they issue and then you apply for the assignment afterwards, but they don't seem to know what I am talking about, the recent post did state this book is very difficult to come by, so has anyone else had the same problem but have managed to get hold of the book?? I would like to take the qualification as I think it will be a good service to offer once I am qualified..

Regards

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

the book that you want can be accessed online from here :

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/sammanual/index.htm

although you may also want to look at

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/salfmanual/index.htm

and

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/sammanual/index.htm

The fill in your Self assessment guide is

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/worksheets/sa150.pdf

To order printed copies use this link :

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/contactus/staustellform.htm

but you need to know the form name / number for which you need to go to this link

http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/forms/search.ladv?sr=0&as=1&cs=iso-8859-1&sc=hmrcforms&sf=&sm=0&nh=10&ha=19&sb=-1&fl1=category%3A&op1=1&ty1=0&tx1=2843&tx3=1&fl3=search:&op3=1&ty3=0

Hope that this helps, happy reading!

Shaun.

Hi Lisa

I believe the book you are refering to is the HMRC publication Self Assessment Tax Returns Guide 6 April 2008 to 5 April 2009 (I believe thats the current one, obviously date will change after April)

ICB did have a limited number of copies last year but it was a one off. The only way to get one is through the Agents & Advisers help desk but from what has recently been posted, you may have to register as an agent first.

Good luck if you have to, what a nightmare it is proving for me. I wrote to them over two weeks ago and haven't had a reply yet.

I just called HMRC to get hold of the manual. I was helpfully told that I could only get hold of one if I am a registered agent.

When I explained to the lady that I wished to get hold of the manual to study to become an agent she informed me that it wouldn't teach me anything and that I could download anything I like from the website.

I mentioned Catch 22 but I think it fell on deaf ears.

Hi Lisa,

I am in exactly the same position as you. (You will know if you have read the previous posts on this). I have been told to write to the CAAT and given an address to write to in Longbenton which I plan on doing (but have been plagued with ill children the last few weeks so is last thing on my mind). Don't have the address handy but will pass it on later. We may not get anything but worth a shot.

Hi Bill

Thankyou for that I will send a letter and see if I get anywhere, let me know if you do receive a copy, another option I suppose is a workshop but not sure if they will teach you enough or just scratch the surface.

Regards

Lisa

Hi Carole

Thankyou for your reply, I have managed to get the address from Wella, so I will give it ago, maybe if they receive several requests they will respond to us.  I hope your children get better soon.

Regards

Lisa

Hi Neil

Mmmm sounds like you didn't get anywhere either, I was told to try a workshop but not sure if this will teach me enough information to take the ICB Diploma.

Hi Lisa & Neil

I did the HMRC Self Assessment workshop last year and whilst it was informative I wouldn't use it as the basis to pass the ICB exam. It does a little more than scratching the surface.

Please take this in the spirit it is intended and I really hate to be picky but I have just noticed a typo on your site. It is only a teeny weeny error but the word useful on your header and footer has been spelt with two Ls

Its OK in the main title on the actual page

Hi Mark

Thankyou for your comment, I think I will go to a workshop just to get some hands on knowledge and then try and get hold of this book to progress further.

Bill

Please don't worry about pointing this out. It is a bit annoying as this was a mistake on the draft which had been corrected and has now crept back in. It is the sort of mistake which really annoys me when I see things like this on other sites and I thought that I had spotted most of them.

Thank you so much for pointing it out.

Regards

Mark

Hi, back to this again!!

Still no signs of this book!

Have any of you managed to do the exam WITHOUT the book, ie just using the online help?

I have experience of self assessment and years of tax experience so I won't be doing the course totally from scratch. just want to get this exam out the way....

Thanks,

Carole

Hi Carole

I sent my letter requesting to be a SA agent over a month ago, and have spent the last hour trying to get through to find out what is happening.

Still haven't managed to get through yet.

It probably is possible to do the assignment without the book but it is definately the main source of information

Bill

Received a message from Ideal Schools -   they are in the process of writing course material for this Certificate.    Expect it to be ready around the end of May.

I enquired about this with the ICB and they tell me that they're releasing a manual towards the end of May too. Maybe this will coincide with the course.

Thanks everyone,

sounds like there is some light at the end of the tunnel, may just hang on until May then. Will check out the BPP book in the meantime though.

Thanks again,

Carole
