Is a degree in accounting enough experience?

Hi guys,

I graduated from uni with a BA in Accounting in November past. I am trying to start my own bookkeeping business as I have loads of time as I wait for arrival of a bambino.

I have bought the "bookcert business start up kit" but am worried that the degree and this business insight won't be enough to get me started with confidence - do you think the knowledge from my degree is sufficient to do bookkeeping or should I look into AAT Bookkeeping qualification, although I thought that this level was equivalent to that of 1st year in my degree? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot =)

To be honest a degree/qualification is not experience, the two really are completely separate though it really should give you a good base for bookkeeping.

I'm not sure if I'd be too concerned about additional bookkeeping qualifications following the degree, but focus more on actual real-world experience so you get comfortable and confident in dealing with all the various needs and situations that happen in a variety of industries, at least comparable to those you expect or aim for as clients.

Hi McSpurren,

I agree with John, experience is what you need to concentrate on now. A suggestion would be to offer your services to a local charity or any family/friends who are in business. Easier said than done, I know, but it can be difficult getting the first client !

Just test the water.

Good luck.
