Money Laundering & Data Protection Registering

I understand that I need to register regarding Money Laundering before I can start working for clients.  I have just called them up and asked them to post me out the forms.  In your experience, how long did it take to become registered and able to commence work?

Also, i just called up the Infomation Commissioners Office to register for Data Protection and was told that Book Keepers dont have to register?  Is this correct, I thought that we had to?

I'm registered so are a number of other bookkeepers I know. I know internal bookkeepers don't need to register because this is covered by their employer. My understanding is that external bookkeepers had to register since we hold data on our clients. For £35 it won't break the bank and at least you know you're covered.

Thanks Wendy.  I will try calling them again, I asked for the forms to be issued to me and she said that I wouldn't need one?  I am glad that I double checked, thank you.

This is the information about registering. Working through the questions in Section 6, starting on page 29 it seems we should be registered.

Hi All

I looked at this last week, and decided I didn't need to register - but thought I had better check again following today's discussion.

Looking at the leaflet, I again thought not - but then phoned the Data Protection Helpline to make sure.

Basically, bookkeepers do not have to register - we are deemed processors of information. However, we may volunteer to register (£35pa) just in case we happen to do a 'one off' event, which may take us into the accountancy area - accountants do have to register.

Bottom line for me - I think I will probably register.

Hi,

On the Data Protection site - registration, I assume we would be under the `finance` category ! what `template category` would bookkeeping come under ??

Ive just taken the following info from the Institute of Certified bookeepers website ( I am am member)

"certified bookkeepers in private practice should now assume that the money laundering regulations 2007 do apply to them, that they are members of the regulated sector and that they must comply with the Regulations"

If you are a member of the ICB, they have tightened up on a lot of things, but they do provide help and support if required.
