Getting the first clients

Hi everyone,
I would like some advise as to how to bring in clients. I started my book-keeping and accounts service and had one client (who was a family member) but now I don't seem to be attracted anyone else!

I've been to a networking event but had no luck to present, and even approached some accountants to see if they would like a helping hand doing some book-keeping especially at this time of the year, but still no luck. I've put word out by mouth to friends and relatives but still nothing.
Is there anything else I could be doing? confused.gif

One approach which worked for me was going to the local business start up course.

We were encouraged to pass out our business cards when there and i handed out quite a few. Also i made myself known to the advisors on the course and developed relationship with them which has, a few months down the line, gotten me a few clients.

Also try marketing yourself in terms of handing out sales flyer to local companies, postcards in shops / postoffices. Look out for new businesses starting up, check the local newspapers for traders advertising and send them a flyer.

Nimac is correct in advising local business start up courses, enquire from your local council / business link for any within your area, they really are a good starting point.

Networking also isn't a one-time thing. It takes time to build relationships. If you expect to hand out some cards and make some quick clients, chances are it will just fail.

With accountants, certainly consider it a two-way street and the opportunity for them with you passing work their way too.

Keep an eye in newspapers and jobs that are advertised, especially part-time ones. You may be able to pick something up where they'd only been looking for employees previously.

Do you have a website? How can people find you? Is there anyone that would recommend you if they hear an opportunity?

Certainly John, i don't think anyone expects to hand out a few business cards and the clients will come rolling in.

Its all part of an overall approach as you suggest. I think most bookkeepers do value our relationships with accountants and consider it a two way relationship.

Building a bookkeeping business as most of us will atest is a long term goal and you really have to grab every opportunity that comes along - such as handing out those business cards.
