HMRC Scam

Hi all,

Got a call today from a client who informed me that he had just received a phone call from someone claiming to be from HMRC telling him that he owed them money and if it was not paid straight away then a warrant for his arrest would be issued, luckily he thought that it must be a scam and phoned me straight away just to confirm.

Just wanted to let you all know that the scammers are trying this and that it may be worth making your clients aware just in case.

I got that myself last year, automated recording.  Rang them back to string them along but I think they sussed me.

Thanks for the heads up Doug. Just seen this pop up on Aweb as well so looks like the scammers have a fair few phone numbers in their telephone auto dial.

Phone number mentioned as from = 0300 200 3639, which is so close to the genuine HMRC numbers. Whatever next.

I've had this happened to a couple of my clients one of which is 80 years old, so you can imagine the panic she went in to. Fortunately they had the sense to contact me first before doing anything.

Good Morning all,

A few years ago a client faced a similar issue but from scammer suggesting they were from Microsoft.

Since then we have included a scam warning in our annual correspondence to clients when asking for paperwork.

We advise that if they receive a phone call regarding a repayment due or tax due, then we are the first contact they make.

Over this tax year we had 4 clients with scam HMRC calls, who thankfully contacted us immediately so end of the scam.
