VAT INSPECTION

Hi everyone, I just received a call that VAT inspection coming in two weeks time, they are suspicious about VAT Returns, how do they look in to invoices? Do they call and check if the purchase was made, even we have VAT invoice or do they check online via some sort VAT of registrar if invoice correct? We paid a lot invoices in cash would that be an issue? I do not know what to expect? Waiting for your response. Thank you.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

This is a forum for professionals helping professionals not for business owners, but I will give you one tip - phone HMRC and move the date of the inspection back so you can speak to your Accountant before they come (assuming you cannot speak to someone else at his/her Accountancy practice)
