Work around on QB

Hi all. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. My client who uses QuickBooks Online and operates a catering and events company. Does anyone know of a work around that will enable me to post purchases relating to particular events on QBO? There doesn't seem to be a job costing or cost centre option here and it would be nice that once customers events sales invoices go on I can then work out the profitability of each event by posting purchases relating to that particular customers events along side telling my client what his profit is. Look forward to any advice given.

Does it have departments? Does it have nominal codes on the online version or can you switch so it does like you can on desktop?

You should be able to use the departments or location function. Call me if you need to discuss. Happy to talk through it with you.

Oh look you did, but you also need to remove the link in the letter Y.

This is a forum for helping lots of people, not for taking things offline.

Good morning Fozlul,

as stated by Joanne, on this site any advice given is available to all, ad infinitum and completely freely. If assistance is taken off line then you are only helping one person rather than potentially hundreds who may visit this thread with similar issues.

The idea of the site is in a large part attempting to try and help fill the gap between what the entry level professional bodies create and the reality of working within this industry. For each person that posts a question, many others, perhaps fearing ridicule at the level of their knowledge do not which is why we attempt to often give quite comptrehensive responses going well beyond the question asked even for some of the simpler questions.

In the case of this one, the complete step by step answer exists on another free site without any restriction access so I was quite happy to post the link to how to set up departments. If you wanted to add to that then please feel free to add further technical detail in responses here. But avoid the urge to take people off site to talk one to one as, as I, and Joanne, say, that way you would only be helping one rather than potentially many with a similar query.

kindest regards,

Shaun.

Indeed.

That same explanation is also, two or three years back, I (politely) refused to give help to someone who rang me after seeing posts on this forum. I told them to ask the question here, and if I was able to answer it I would, if not someone else would probably step in - and the reason I gave them was pretty much what Shaun said above: So that the question and any answers were then available on the site for others to benefit from.

AFAIK, that never happened - the person never posed their question here - but c'est la vie.

Worst I ever got Vince was a call on Christmas day expecting me to talk the person through issues that they were having with VAT processing in VT. They seemed to believe that because they had one of the old paid subscriptions that this was a paid service where we have to give them the answers that they are looking for, immediately, no matter what time of the day or night (or year). Like yourself I told them to post their question on the site and similar to your experience, they never did.

Actually, thinking back, I remember that the thing that annoyed me most about that telephone conversation was that the person didn't actually even introduce themselves but rather went straight into the question.

As will a million ambulance chasers wanting to make an injury claim that you sustained whilst making a PPI claim on the new telephony system that your business has purchased that like the new gas supply is much cheaper than what you have now (which they always say without knowing how much you are on now?)... Oh, and putting your phone number up also makes it easier for those looking to push apprentices, tax advice, insolvency services, stationary supplies, PII, Pensions pushers, SEO....

When I first got my office I had a call from this company about adding my number to Directory enquiries or summat and like a twonk I said yes.  Next thing my phone was inundated with most of what Shaun mentioned - although you did forget the water coolers Shaun!!

A lot of it has died now but still get telephone companies ring up maybe once a fortnight.

However on a personal level I regularly get calls from PPI companies and apparently I've had a car accident that wasn't my fault.  Ive now resorted to stringing them along and asking for more details of this non existent car accident. One bloke had a go at saying the rough date and I completely flummoxed him and he hung up.  The last one was a couple of days ago and I'm fairly sure the lass on the other end was an automated voice and because I was giving non standard responses kept repeating herself. I thought afterwards I should have tried a naughty response but knowing my luck it would have turned out to be someone real!!!

Oh you mustve bumped into my car John as I too have apparently had a car accident that wasnt my fault. Reckon I might have to sue!

Ive not had calls about stuff that goes on via BKN but Ive had a fair few emails. I try to encourage folk back on to the website - shouldnt be embarrassed about asking a question, gawd look at some of my earlier ones! lol.

Perhaps if Fozlul ever comes back on to the website then he could do the usual intro - what prof body do you belong to, what qualifications do you have, how long in role, where up to in your studies-what exams passed/with what body/in midst of doing, where based, what you did before this role? That sort of thing. Although given his website has a forum perhaps he may not want to assist on ours.

I've been playing around with QB online and there is a "projects" option if they have the top level version. But you have to turn it on. https://community.intuit.com/articles/1549960-quickbooks-online-projects You can also set up "class" for separate types of jobs and assign to a class in invoices and bills, then you can break down p&l to class type. I haven't actually used this in practice, but have just been playing as I have a client interested in it. Thanks Lyndsey

Hi,
Sorry I'm abit late in replying and you have probably sorted it all out by now!

You can set up classes in QBO, I think it is in Accountant/Settings. It always used to be classes, but it may well have been updated and called something else by now.

Then when you put in the purchase invoices on the far right hand side 'classes' should appear at the end of the line, there is a drop down box and you can select the one that you need. Then later if need be you can run a report on the classes.

This thread should be the first thing anyone new to BKN reads. Website to fill in gaps. Feel free to ask questions. And feel embarrassed at lack of knowledge.. On my part.

if you have the Plus package you can use "Classes" which you can add ot each transations. There are also Locations. Easy peasy. But you have to have the most expensive package.

Its an old post, answered already by a few folk.   Resurrected by Nick (but not specifically about QB).  But Im sure there was a post on here a couple of days ago about QB  that might still need help - you and Andrea can be the site's QB bods!
