Thank you campaign

Am thinking we need to resurrect this once more.  Ive seen loads of people on here over the last few weeks who go out of their way to help people, some with that little nuggets of pure gold, some who do some rather detailed advice for people and what do they get for their trouble. Nothing, nada, zilch! no   We are supposed to be the 'polite' country so come on people  - an acknowledgement of some sort for the people who have helped you out!

Sorry, its a real bug bear of mine, but its one small word and really doesnt take much, after the effort the responder has put in!!

Thankyou for resurrecting this campaign Jo...

Lol... See what I did there...

Actually, I was thinking of you a little while ago my wee fellow banker... What are your views on bitcoins? Not a debate for this thread but rather over in this one : http://www.book-keepers.org.uk/t61868517/bitcoin-and-sage/

My view is very much that people can't just go around making their own currencies up so its really just an investment (not necessarily a very good one!) similar to a painting (or in the case of bitcoins an invisible painting that we are told is there and is worth x amount).

Thank you boys!

Sorry - I had to wander orf.....had a very important email to do to a lovely. Then had a phone call call from another lovely inviting me to do the concord tour this weekend at Manchester airport. My 10 year old nephew (who has the deep voice of a 20 year old) is obsessed with planes and wants to be a pilot! Anyway - will take the bitcoins onto the other thread.

Is it hard to word an opening post with a minute modicum of manners? I'll not lock and load on any specific thread(s) but come on.

I think that the issue there is that some posters assume that the people answering the questions are being paid to answer the questions so the assumption is that we are supplying a service rather than just being people all the the same boat, all trying to help each other.

For the most part over time people who hang around the site long enough get it and become much freindlier.

There is of course also the other issue in that some people who post questions are afraid of ridicule as happens on some sites so the initial posts are made in a defensive manner and defensive can often come accross as agressive when written down.

If people are long term rude eventually the site turns against them. Not answering their questions or on occassion things can escalate. Thankfully though thats quite rare and normally things are resolved before it gets to that stage.

Hi Shaun. Yes, I imagine that some folk believe those who answer, are paid. I'm making an assumption even your rank is without remuneration?

No, there is absolutely no payment. All done for the love of the site.

Glad Im not the only one Amanda.

I will bet that your children will be saying the same to their own children in time - and you can remind them how they laughed at you!

Have you noticed the posters who dont say thank you, until they suddenly realise they have another question to pose!

I get a LOT of help from people on this site THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I don't know how I would get by without it and do really, really appreciate it. I'm sure I thank people profusely but occasionally I miss their reply (or a few replies to my many questions) and I see it a while later and then I feel like I may be annoying by bumping up all my posts to the top with just 'thank you very much' (I look at posts through most recent).

Shaun, Joanne, Vince, John, Mark, Rob, Sharon and Michelle your help is hugely appreciated!!!! and as I have said before..you should charge for it! I for one would pay for it

Morning Joanne,

I think that its more the ones where you ask them for a little bit of information so that you are able to answer their question or know at what level to gear the answer but they simply ignore the request.

There have been times where I have thought of adding a post saying "Well, if you don't understand my question you certainly are not going to understand any answer that I give so maybe best I don't".

But then I think that when we answer questions on this site we are not answering the person that asks the question but rather everyone in the future where they search up an answer that we have already given.

Of course, as area's such as tax never stand still that in itself can be problematic but thats a whole different arguement. The important thing is not to let the poster themselves spoil giving an answer.

That said, there have been a couple recvently who were obviously business owners rather than financial professionals where the persons responses or lack of have made me consider preventing them from asking further questions on the site.

If you think about it, if they do not give enough information to answer the question then the answers are flawed / incomplete for future readers which defeats the arguement for allowing those without the professional ettiquette expected of people in this profession to remain.

Morning Shaun

Not necessarily, but yes does also include them.

Prime example - can you please suggest  a good 'xyz' - basic question, no more information saught or needed.  Several people suggest.  Poster clearly been back online several days later - not a thank you, kiss my a**e or even you lot are all wrong, nothing, zilch, nada.  Downright rude and frankly ignorant.

I now have a little black book startedbiggrinbiggrin

Tut, I can see the inevitable escalation here from little black book to Cray super computer.

With my other hat on I can definitely see the arguement here for the necessity of a bespoke Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

I'll get started on the feasibility study. We'll need end user meetings and focus groups with an initial timescale of around three months to publication of the project viability report.

Vince you will obviously head up the development team. I'll take the business analysis and project management. Joanne will represent the business through to control of user acceptance testing. We will need some developers, systems analysts and a DBA on board.

Don't worry Joanne, provided that you do not alter your initial requirements we should be able to bring this baby in within a couple of million.

Tut, SQL isn't a database, it's a method of accessing a database.

Your lack of comprehension Johnny obviously means that you should be in the projects senior management team. (lol, if only that was not so true of management!)

However I have an excuse as cpanel (website control panel) calls them mysql databases.

Hi John, Johnny,

SQL stands for Sturctured Query Language. Its the way to access the data held in a relational database.

A relational database is made up of columns and rows much like a spreadsheet. But the data is held in tables generally with inter dependancies.

Databases such as MySQL and SQLServer basically bastardise the acronym. If either Johnny or yourself had said MySQL or SQLServer then you would have been referring to a product name rather than the language used for accessing the database.

Personally I use IBM's DB2 (since 1989) and also have SQLServer on my PC (although the SQLServer is more of a plaything to keep my SQL skills honed rather than something I use for profit).

If you want a version of SQLServer Microsoft have various free versions. It's a considerably more grown up product than Access which at it's core is really Excel with bells on.

HTH,

Shaun.

I'm not sure I like the role I have. Thought I would just make you lot the odd brew and hit my head on the glass ceiling, whilst wearing high heels!!!

I do have one initial requirement that might cost a lot, well two. A complete ban on certain riff raff, you know who I mean.   Plus an embedded link to the thank you campaign thread as a message to every single ignorant bod who doesn't show their appreciation within the space of  5 days or having logged on 5 times after the last person has responded.  Then, oh a third, an inability to pose further questions if they haven't shown due appreciation.

Whilst here, I would like to say thank you once again to you all.

Or maybe just posting

or some other such acronym to warn others like

DWYB (Dont waste your breathe!)

I really must set up that database as the numbers are increasing weekly to the point where my little black book is totally full!!!!!

 Hi Joanne

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  What the site needs is a small questionnaire when they sign up that asks these questions we request, which then appear on their profile. Actually that's what the biography bit is supposed to be for   The site is public (quite rightly) so with the best will in the world you're not going to stop ignorance to the way this forum is supposed to work.

It is rude for someone to ask a question then not respond when further prompted, but that's the nature of the internet.

Speaking of profiles, I've just noticed you've aged slightly since joining the group biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Actually that's what the biography bit is supposed to be for   The site is public (quite rightly) so with the best will in the world you're not going to stop ignorance to the way this forum is supposed to work.   Would be a good idea, but in this particular case one of my reasons for my 'rant' was that questions were asked to answer the question they first posed, plus then to help clarify a response I made to a point Shaun brought up. But yes perhaps a forced view of the rules before being able to post might help, but I suspect folks will click on 'read' without reading just like many many do without reading T&Cs.

It is rude for someone to ask a question then not respond when further prompted, but that's the nature of the internet.   We really shouldnt have to prompt should we.  Plus Ive seen it on so many sites and I guess I should be used to the ignornance of some, but Im still going to wage a one woman campaign, which might turn into a one woman war if they arent careful!  wink

Speaking of profiles, I've just noticed you've aged slightly since joining the group biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin     Hey?  Say what?  Well I joined in 2012 so I guess I am a wee bit older!

 Thank you John biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Ive noticed an increasingly repeating trend on here - what is it with people who cannot possibly read back messages on topical subjects? Who insist on asking the same questions that have been answered a million times already? As if theirs is a unique Q? Why do such folk not read this forum more and treat it like CPD? Oh yes, because they know they dont need to spend time researching stuff, or indeed helping their fellow professionals because why spend time doing that when they can just get the answers handed to them on a plate!

But then cant be arsed saying thank you or acknowledging folk in any way for taking the time and trouble to answer!!

Getting more royally peed off by such folk by the year!
