New Companies Register (Digital)

He everyone!

A newly established limited company has brought me a letter, from a company which I think is called "New Companies Register (Digital)" - I cant quite tell!!

The letter has a crest on it, a web address of www.govuk.ncrdigital.info and is requesting £37.50 payment.

The letter says:

"On (date) a new entry was made on the Register of Companies at Companies House for the company (name) with the given number (number).  Under provisions laid out in CA2006, the New Company Register (Digital) was created.

All required information has now been received relating to your company from Companies house for entry to take place on the New Company Register (Digital).  For inclusion the registration fee is now due.

The current fee is £37.50 no further payment will be required and the company will remain on the register as long as your company is registered with Companies House."

Then it goes on to give bank details to account name NCR (Digital)

Has anyone heard of this before?  It looks official but doesn't really state whether this is mandatory or give much information about the why.  Is this official? Is it a gimmick?

Its a scam Michelle,

just bin it... Or frame it... Or make paper aeroplanes out of it.... The only thing not to do is pay it.

For further info it gets a mention as a known scam in section (3) of this link :

www.gov.uk/government/publications/reporting-fraud-about-a-company-to-companies-house/reporting-fraud-to-companies-house

All the best,

Shaun.

It's a scam, and absolutely nothing to do with the UK Government.  Always look at the last bit before  the .com or co.uk or in this case info.  That tells you the name of the site.  For instance the owners of this site could set up www.foxaccountancy[dot]book-keepers.org.uk and make a page up with your details on it, if they wanted to.   I did a quick look up on the domain and it's registered in the US but under a domain privacy company.  It was registered in September last year.

Any companies registered in the UK will automatically appear on companies house web check as well as various websites like duedil and companycheck.

EDITED because I had put a live link to an error page, sorry about that Shaun.  Dig the avatar btw.

Paraphrasing the contents of their letter:

"We've set up a company under the relevant legislation. The details of your company are noted at Companies House. If you want to register with our company as well, it'll cost you £37.50 up front."

The sneaky bit is them trying to make it look like it is official (govuk), a legislated requirement to register (mention of the Companies Act), and due (only if inclusion is "required").

Hey guys, cheers for that. I'll send a scanned copy over to CH for their numbers, and let the client know. Definitely looked fishy to me, so figured it was worth a post even if just to spread the word!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

There was an NCR (Digital) Ltd registered on 24 Oct 2014. I wonder?

Companies House list this as a known fraud - so why would this company still be listed.. could be coincidence but...
