How likely am I to get another job?

Hi everyone,

I work full time at the moment but due to redundancies I am now doing the work of 3 people and its too much. I've discussed it, well as much as he'd let me, with my boss and hes no intention of getting any more staff in. In fact if I can't manage I should work late and weekends, FOC of course biggrin

Hmmm right, I'm not a jobsworth but it seems to be what he expects people to do to cover for a lack of staff. I don't mind doing it once in a while or to get a job finished but the sales staff work over unpaid every day for at least 2 hours. I can't do that I've 2 children and to be quite honest the salary doesn't cover what I do between 8.30 & 5, never mind any extra.

Anyway I'm looking to get another job whilst I get my bookkeeping business going but as soon as I mention it to anyone they go oooh you'll not get another job at the moment, you'll never get any clients in this climate stay where you are. I would do but its so stressful now its making me feel ill so I need to move really.

I'm in Pudsey in Leeds, so I suppose I'm asking hows everyone in West Yorkshire finding it but other comments welcome!! Ideally I could do with finding another job sharpish and then getting the business kicked off as I can't afford to not work whilst it gets off the ground.

hi there I dont know what the job market in leeds is like but I wouldn't imagine you'd have trouble finding another job if you have the relevant experience (which it sounds like you do) Im in the midlands and there are LOADS of accounts/bookkeeping jobs, unfortunately no one wants to give me one as I have no experience only qualifications!! Have you looked on the direct gov website to see whats available in your area? there is no harm in looking and even applying whilst already employed

Morning,

Have you thought about going self employed?

Clients seem not to ask so many questions about experience compared with employers. I guess because it is less of a risk to them to use a freelancer than employ someone, and in this current economical climate there are plently of employees to choose from.

Also most businesses in this country don't need a full time bookkeeper. Builders, window cleaners, taxi drivers, etc, only need part time bookkeepers, so you can pick up quite a bit of business by having 10-15 clients.

Although it wont happen overnight, you will be able to build a successful business.

Then, if after 2 years or so you decide you would rather be employed, you then would have the experience alongside your qualifications to help you get full time employement.

Hope this gives food for thought.
