Hi Karen

I've just been on Quickbooks website because I'm thinking of buying a package, once you do they supply books and support (at an extra cost). But I have downloaded the Simple Start version which is free and you can teach yourself. There is lots of help there, as you go along. It seems a simple enough package. I know I've probably not answered your question very well but you should try that.

Hi Karen,

I am a Quickbooks users I have Pro 2008, and I must say that their support is rubbish to say the least, lets just say the people on the other end are not bookkeepers or accountants and are just call centre people with very little knowledge, I gave up using the support long ago!
The book they send is very basic and dosen't really teach you much at all. You would be better off joining a forum with QB advisors on it. If you google it there are a few about that have professional people there to answer questions via e-mail, the one I used (can't remember which one now) is free. There is always this site off course. The one thing I will say about it it is very user friendly unlike SAGE! Although saying that if you are use to sage you will find QB very easy to use. I use SAGE instants and QB's.

Hi Karen

Excuse my nievity, but what different processes do you carry out on each of the packages?

I really would prefer to use Sage but what I find off putting is the price and the fact that you have to pay around £120 for each client you add on! Quickbooks is cheaper and no charge for extra clients, plus it seems very easy to use and the reports look great.

As someone who is just starting up a business I would appreciate your point of view.
And anyone elses, of course

If you download QuickBooks Simple Start (which is free) then you can run the tutorials which will give you a good grounding in the basics.

I use Quickbooks and Sage, and having used Sage for a long time I must say I took a little while to get used to Quickbooks. It is fairly user friendly, especially in allowing you to delete incorrect postings and journals. (Albeit this may not be such a good thing!)

I agree with Amanda in that the Quickbooks support is rubbish...honestly don't know why my client still pays for it. You get a call centre in India and the only two times I've had to use them I found it very hard to even understand what they were saying, yet alone follow the advice.

When I first started using QB I looked for some courses, but couldn't find anything. There are some QB trainers on the Intuit website, but they will probably be rather expensive. Due to time/work commitments I prefer to self-study too. The book that came with the software wasn't bad, but no help for VAT as it was geared for the American/Canadian market!

Hi Elaine,

I was like you I was trained up on Sage but the cost put me off, I just couldn't afford it and still can't. I use Sage Instants for a client and then use QB as well. With QB it was a cost thing for me and also I was recommended it by someone I know who absolutley swears by it. Anyway you can have on my version 99 companies (I think it is), its very user friendly as well. I have used QB quickstart at a clients and although its fine for what they use it for I wouldn't use it myself as the PRO or PREMIER versions have alot more functions to use.

Like Clare says give the Free version ago before purchasing it and see how you get on.
