Confused about claiming back VAT on mileage

Hi there - apologies if this has been asked!
I work for a company where employees are paid 40p per mile if they do business trips (in their own cars)
Am I right in thinking that I can reclaim the VAT on the fuel element of this - rates are the Fuel Advisory rates on the HMRC website - as long as I have receipts for the petrol used.
Any replies would be gratefully appreciated!!
Nicky

I think you can claim VAT on 12p of the 40p and like you say must have VAT receipts.

You can claim the input tax on the advisory fuel rates published by HMRC depending on the engine size, so on a 1000cc petrol car for example, you can claim 7/47 x 12p

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm

This is the current link. You must also ensure you have a VAT receipt to cover the fuel used for that date.

It's a lot of hassle for what you get back generally!

You need to use the HMRC advisory fuel rates for the engine size of the vehicle.

So as backoffice says its 7/47 x the relevant mileage rate.

So if its a 1.6l I think its 12p.

for example, 4000 miles.

4000 x 12p = 480

480 / 47 x 7 = £71.49 input vat reclaimable.

You then need to compare the VAT on the fuel receipts to ensure that the total VAT on the receipts is adequate to cover the VAT reclaimed.
