Payroll Software - 12pay?

Hi everyone.  (first post!)

I've always used Sage Payroll (at accountants where I used to work) or HMRC CD until now.  However, having branched out fully on my own, I have a growing number of clients who want payroll services including payslips so I'm looking at the most cost effective option.

I have tried out 12pay on a recommendation.  Does anyone have any thoughts on the pro's / con's of this software or do you recommend any other software?

To begin, I'll need something with multiple companies, less than 10 employees for each and the need to print payslips.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

Have a look at payroll manager. This is one I use, as a novice to payroll and I find it very user friendly and not too expensive.

Kind regards
Peter

My wife does payroll for several companies using Payroll Manager and likes it much better than Sage.

Especially useful is the option to breakdown all the calculations to see what it really did to arrive at its answers.

Hi Mark

Welcome to the forum

I currently use Sage as that was a product that I have always used and feel comfortable with, over the next few months I will be looking to change to either 12pay (1st choice) or Moneysoft Payroll Manager (2nd choice) from the beginning of the next tax year.
I think that they both offer a free trial, so why not use them and see what you think, and then when you have tried it let us know your opinions on here.

Regards

Mark

I like to use sage instant payroll, but obviously comes at a price, it's what I use in my full time job, I have no problems at all with it, but then I haven't experienced anything else. I have downloaded the free trial of 12pay but haven't yet used it so I can't comment....

Had used Sage since 1990 and become disallusioned with their annual charges, updates and poor support.
Have used since then Moneysoft Payroll for 7 companies.

Problem with instant payroll is you can only use it for one company and only for 10 employees  You can have problems if you have several leavers and starters in one financial year which would go over the 10 limit.

Hello, As 12Pay has been recommended here (we just had a call from a potential user who found us by reading this thread) I thought I'd introduce myself, and if anyone has any questions about the product feel free to put them to us.

I'll endeavour to not spam the forum when people ask for recommendations, but I'll check the forum out periodically and if there are any payroll related questions I'll offer my 2p.

Hi I
became a self employed bookkeeper in April and needed a way of doing payroll.
I looked into 12pay and thought it might suit my purposes.

I have got to say that I am well impressed, they have a forum that you can use to help you, a video that shows you step by step how to use it, and if you have to contact them with an email they get back to you super quick. Service with a smile that you rarely get these days.

I can not comment on any others as I have not tried any, that alone speaks volumes.

I believe that it is value for money, and well worth taking a peek at, I buy self seal payslips and it copes fine.

Hi Dotty,

Which self-seal payslips do you use?

Update: Since I posted the question above I've been looking into your recommendations (thank you) and have gone with 12pay. I've run several months (April-October) with one client and (August-September) with another and everythings gone very well.

Mark

P.S I would also be interested in which payslips anyone uses.

Hi There

I saw the 12pay recommendation on this thread and have since downloaded the system.

I must say that I am impressed, I also found out that the free download covers you for 6 pay slip periods, if you don't use the payslip function then you can carry on using for free. (i think this is correct)

So thank you to the forum for the advice.

I also really like 12pay. I have previously used QuickBooks and Sage Instant but find 12pay to be much quicker. I've just transferred two payrolls across to 12pay to try it out and it took just 5 minutes to run the payroll, check the figures and email the reports to the client.

The 'report pack' is an excellent feature and I also like the report that shows the detailed calculation.

However, I am using the paid version because, for me, the red writing across the bottom of the payslips does not look very professional.

Sorry I have been busy Amy8a

The payslips I use are sages self seal, this is because my client wants sealed ones so I got some in. I find they are fine and the boxes match. Leaving a neat looking job.

Cheers Dotty

thats interesting, you use sage payslips for 12 pay?

I agree with Amy8a, the red writing on the bottom of the pay slip is annoying. i only have one person on payroll so its not worth buying it yet.

I find the system good tho.

Well, all of your kind comments have made my Saturday morning for me!

I'll just address a couple of specifics. In case anyone trying the software doesn't realise, the red watermark at the bottom of reports is a feature of the free Express software. The paid-for Premium edition (that allows you to manage up to 3 clients) has an unobtrusive light-grey watermark, and the Bureau edition for unlimited clients allows you to change the watermark text to promote your own business rather than ours.

The paid-for editions support several stationery layouts for payslips, including some that you can buy from the online shop of our market-dominating rival. smile

But somewhat more cost-effective, and equivalent quality as far as we can see, are the RSxx styles from Collate-IT.

And Gerry is right, the free Express software permits payslips for the first 6 periods, after that you can keep on processing but without payslips and management reports, but still with the assorted Pxx reports for HMRC.

Hi Tom

Thank you for that information. As a new user it will help.

I'm pleased we made your Saturday morning but remember the comments are because your software is good, so its thanks to you in the first place.

I for one, am particular pleased to have you here for advice, its not often you get to speak to a real person for free concerning their software you are using so thank you.

Gerry

Hello Ronit,

you do realise that this is a UK site so US software would not in general be able to work to HMRC requirments. (SSP, SMP, CIS, etc.)

I've checked the HMRC approved software list (see here for a list of approved software suppliers : http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/efiling/paye/paye_software_forms.htm) and your company is not upon it so I assume that as yet you do not have a UK version of your software.

love the title used for describing Payroll "Workforce Optimisation through time and attendance solutions" classic management consultant speak and a great case of does exactly what it says on the tin.

Have a good day,

Shaun.

Well, I have written a review page based on top payroll software where I have mentioned their features, prices and other important things, my review page would help you in understanding each payroll software and you would be able to buy one according to your business requirement.

The link has been removed as it seems to be SEO work.

Someone else professing to be from LA (#1) also posted that they had written this in this thread : www.book-keepers.org.uk/forum.spark nine days ago.

Both userids have now been banned... I'll let you pick whether you were banned for potential plaigerism or attempting to use this site for SEO purposes. The result is the same either way.

Shaun.

#1 strange that one of you is in India and the other in LA but you both had pretty similar IP addresses which would suggest Delhi
