Learning at College....

Hi all,

ok, i have been doing a home learning course for ICB level 1 manual for about 9 months but i am finding it pretty tough at the moment. My main problem is comittment.
Other things come along and i find its been 2 or 3 weeks since i did any studying.
Then when i do pick up my books again i find ive forgotten a lot of stuff so spend quite a while going over old ground.

Now, ive found a couple of college courses offering level 1 training for 3 hours a week over 10 weeks and i think if i enrolled on a course i would be more commited.

Its not a lot of money - around £75 for the 10 week course.

Anybody else gone down this route or feel its worth doing?
Also, the course local to me is for IAB and my studying so far has been ICB. Obviously this will mean starting again but shouldnt be a problem.

Quick question about IAB - can you do level 1 manual and then level 2 computerised? This is the route i would ideally like to take.

Many thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

I would say its a question of motivation.

I would suggest getting a past paper for the level I ICB and just have a look to see how much you do know - this may surprise you in two ways; either 1. you know more than you imagine and in which case sit the exam and get that one under your belt.  Or 2, you need to question your motivation.

This may seem a little harsh, but I know from personal experience motivation can either make or break you and not just in terms of studying.  Life often gets in the way and I know from my own experience there is always  going to be something else to get out of the way before getting your head back into your books - am I right ?

I think your committment has just lost its way a little,  the fact that you have posted on the forum  and enquried about college courses confirms that you want to sort it out and get back on track.  It would be a shame to start again so before you decide whether to do this have a go at scheduling study time into your day, try doing just an hour each day, break down what you need to do into smaller portions and set yourself realistic targets and write these down, tick off as you go along.

Distance learning is not for everyone, Ive done lots of courses over the years so I know there are times when you question your committment, just remind yourself why you are putting yourself through this !

Hopfully another member of the forum can answer your question about IAB.

Julie

thanks julie.

i have got past papers and although i got to most of the answers i am not convinced i have the methods right. I am finding it very hard and maybe its not for me.
Motivation is a big factor but i just feel there will be no other distractions if i was enrolled at a college.
It doesnt help that i am already employed and im looking at bookkeeping as extra income.
Obviously i would be more motivated if i was relying on it.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

Rob

Hi Rob,

Yes, I understand your reasons for looking at a college course,  I think with the structured lessons / homework etc.,  you will receive, this will get you back on track and hopfully help you finally decide if bookkeeping is for you.  So it would be worth going this way.

I studied whilst working and my motivation was wanting to get away from the 9 to 5 and an awfull working enviornment / boss !

Good luck Rob,

Julie

Hi Rob,
Although you can check with your local college, I am almost certain that you can proceed from the IAB level 1  certificate in Bookkeeping to the IAB level 2  certificate in Computerised bookkeeping.  Also, the IAB qualifications are highly valued by employers in industry and the public sector and you can also use them towards the first stages of going down the self employment route.

Steve.
