Would I make a good book-keeper?

Hi I'm new to this forum.

I have a real interest in how businesses are run and love chatting to those that are self-employed. I would like to become a book-keeper and start my own business. I don't have any accounting experience but have done basic admin jobs etc. I didn't really enjoy maths at school, and found all that pythagorean theorem and trig stuff boring. I was good at arithmetic though!

Basically what I'd like to know is this, do you have to be good at maths to be a good book-keeper? If I take a book-keeping course would I be able to run my own business?

Many thanks

Jill

Not all the maths you learn at school is relevent to book keeping.  In fact I didn't even pass my maths o level and I still run my book keeping business. If you do some sort of book keeping course, it will cover all the number crunching bits you need to know.

Best of luck

Gomez

Just to let you know I never passed maths at school and never wanted anything to do with maths. Yet book-keeping is so much more than just numbers. It's being able to turn unordered data into meaningful information, speaking to clients and generally making their life easier!

Best wishes

I strongly believe that to be a good book-keeper you need to have an interest in business, and an interest in how they are run. It's also important to be able to communicate with clients.

From your post you appear to have both of these traits - combine these with relevant book-keeping knowledge and skills and you will make a fine book-keeper!

All the best in your future venture!

Guy
