Advertising

Hi everybody

Had a call today from someone about advertising in DIY stores via a TV monitor, does it work? It's quite expensive so thought I would ask if anyone had tried it?

On the grounds that I've never seen TV advertising in any DIY stores I think that your first question should be where is the nearest one so that I can check it out.

There are currently a lot of scams around related to advertising such as the perenial police calendar, benevolant fund magazine, etc.

Take the calls with a pinch of salt and don't part with any money until you are absolutely certain that the advertising medium even exists.

If it does, ask yourself, would you take note of advertising in that way?

Advertising in a DIY store is not exactly airport TV ads where those present have nothing to do but look at the screens.

Personal view is that this one's a non starter and the only person that will get any business from it is the person selling the advertising.

I did this a few years back thinking I'll get a lot of CIS guys and general builders. Cost an absolute fortune and got me exactly nothing. And I hadn't realised they had me on a rolling contract so was sucked in for another fruitless year. Don't touch with a barge pole in my opinion.

My brother runs a screen advertising company in Torquay but they are mostly set up in areas you would be hanging about in such as the post office, hairdressers, fish and chip shops and the like rather than in retail outlets. I can let you have the website details if you want to take a look (to compare with what you were offered as I know it's legit - I don't want to be accused of advertising his services, apart from anything else I have no idea where you are based!).

I looked into this a few years ago with a local builders merchants, it was very expensive and once I had done the figures I thought it wasn't worth it so said no to it. Glad I did say no!

Got to look at how many other people would be advertising on the same thing, how long would your advert be on screen and therefore how long it would take to come back round again. On the off-chance someone might see it and think - hey I need a bookkeeper, then by the time its registered that fact in the brain (will they have remembered the name of your business?) it will have gone and will they wait around for it to appear again - probably not. Asking existing customers for referrals is quite often the best way and do all of us do it - I am guilty of not leveraging this little gem.

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.
