Had enough of HMRC Basic PAYE Tools - alternative suggestions please!

Hi - I currently used HMRC's Basic PAYE Tools (RTI Version) to run monthly payrolls for 6 clients.

However following several issues with it I have decided to try and find a suitable (free??) alternative.  The final straw was not being able to make a negative adjustment to an employee's record as they left after I had processed the payroll and submitted my FPS.  The HMRC help desk was only able to suggest restoring the payroll to prior to the FPS, but it would restore all 6 companies, not just the one with the problem.

So, can anyone recommend  free (or reasonably cheap) payroll software that is suitable for multi-company payrolls?  Not a huge number of employees on each one, but will need to be able to cope with Directors, expenses, online submission and a few other things that don't spring to mind!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Moneysoft is often recommended on here, as is 12Pay, so both worth a look.

12Pay is highly recommended from me and lots of people here.

Yep, another vote for 12pay... But moneysoft also has a strong following so definitely worth getting the trials of both and giving them a side by side test run.

Just double checking re. error made using HMRC Basic Tools.  Is restoring a backup the only way to amend previous pay periods?   My problem is lowering the amounts paid not under-declarations.

Thanks, Tim

Right i've got it. I can delete one at a time, the entries I've made in advance and then use the 'Change' button to reduce submitted ones.

My preference is for Moneysoft but 12pay also good.  IMO the best two on the market.

I use Moneysoft. It's great. Easy to use, easy to make changes if you go wrong (not that I do!), excellent customer service. No complaints whatsoever.

You may also wish to consider which payroll software will do all AE tasks. At the moment I use Moneysoft but as it is only going to do half a job where AE is concerned so I have downloaded a free trail of another software provider which completes all aspects of AE. What you don't want to do is get used to one (like I did) then have to change at a later date . So if you have clients who have employees who are going to enrol workers in to a qualifying pension scheme then you may want to have a good look at the options

I'm using Moneysoft and its working fine because I have CIS contractor.otherwise I would rather prefer 12pay because it's free.

Brightpay?  Let us know how you get on.  Apparently moneysoft will do the AE calculations come the time but i'm guessing you want something a bit more hands on?

Hi John

Yes it's Brightpay. First client staging October 15 and I'm using Iris for that one (clients choice) Next client not until Oct 16 - unless I pick one up in between. So the plan is use Brightpay for a bit, get used to it and it's quirks so hopefully will be ok and confident using it when Oct 16 client stages. I'm not going to pay for a software that only does half a job, payroll is a pain in the **** at the best of times.

I enjoy payroll.  I used to do the payroll for 220 odd chamber of commerce staff (as an employee) and loved every minute of it.

My first staging dates aren't until May 2017.

I've used 12pay and Moneysoft, currently just the latter as I have CIS clients.

I did have a minor panic as one of my clients received a letter about a staging date of July, thought it was this year but it's 2016 so I can bury my head in the sand for a bit longer.
