Advertising Scam

Hello,

In my eagerness to get my business out there, I think I've been scammed by not one, but 2 companies.

The first, Vison Publications tugged on my heartstrings saying the money was to support the forresters fund.  The second was Advanced Publications for the police magazine, Streetwatch.  They are now trying again under a different company name Mode PR for a different police magazine that I didn't sign up for to begin with.

This has only become apparant after I looked them up on the internet before emailing a complaint about their poor communication skills and customer services.

Has anyone else come across this before?

Yep I've had a call from these guys too. At the time I didn't realise it was a scam but as I was busy asked them to send details in the post. The man I spoke with was a bit taken aback and said I could always book the ad and cancel later but I wasn't interested. That weekend an article was in my local paper with a representative of the local forces stating they had no involvement with the publication. Oh, and guess what, they never sent me the details in the post!

A client of mine got scammed by these guys, gave them £450 plus VAT, and they had the nerve to take another lump sum out of his account 5 months later. He managed to get that back somehow. I have a feeling that that lot, or someone pulling a similar scam were on crimewatch a couple of years ago.

Unfortunately once your name and number are out there as we advertise our business via web, yell, etc the soft underbelly of the not so Great part of Britain occupants come out to play.

I've had numerous calls since setting my business up from yell to the observer magazine and also similar to the above. The last guy purporting to be from a fire brigade magazine said he was ringing me back following my company's agreement to place an ad. Of course I had never even spoken to them before but It's easy to see how a larger company could be taken advantage of.

I'm 40 years old, grumpy and cynical so told him he was mistaken......he hung up without even replying.

To OP I sympathise with you but thank you for posting and hope it saves someone else that reads this some money by not making the same mistake.

Ken

Thanks for the warning and this sort of thing will probably increase whilst unemployment remains high. I had a spate of these a few years ago and they were also eager to tell me they were allied with the local school publication before I extracted that they weren't actually representing the police force.

I nearly always say "we don't take cold calls". Some try and say I've had dealings with them before along the lines of "you once bought an ice cream from a company that merged with our parent company prior to their re-locating and changing their trade-name." Most selling plays on our vulnerabilities so I prefer not to listen at all.

take care
Tim

The police/fire brigade diaries/year planners have been going for a while, at least 10 years.

They also throw in 'emotional' ploys that you would usually support, such as looking after disabled, children, animals, etc.. It makes you seem more heartless when you tell them to p*ss off!

There's only one approach to take with people like this, get rid of them ASAP. Don't engage. Just say you don't do advertising.

Another tip with unwanted sales calls is to ask them to take you of their calling list/database. Works for bigger companies and they rarely argue! In my job I try not to let any sales people speak to the boss - not always easy as they use all sorts of tricks. I usually work on: if they will not leave contact details they are sales!

Reading this forum I will be very careful about putting my name on any lists (Yell etc) just to avoid the sales calls.

Thank you for all the great information, Sylvia

On the subject of scams, just received an email this morning which is a scam I haven't seen before - "Your Company“s website is selected to represent England in The Competition Europe“s Best Websites!" There is an entry fee of EUR 350 and it looks like it may be an updated, SEO friendly, version of the European Directory scam which has been so prominent in the past.

Of course it may be genuine, it just seems to play on vanity - and if it's a genuine competition, which you haven't even entered, why should you pay a fee?

The website is http://www.europesbestwebsites.com/

Hello!

Thanks everyone for your support,

I'm still being chased for the last ad that I didn't even place. I received a letter saying 'DO NOT IGNORE THIS LETTER' so guess what I've done... ignored it. They haven't had the balls to ring me after the blasting I gave them on the phone last time. I can't say I'm surprised though. I don't think I'd ring me again either!

Kirsty

We get the police diaries phone call every year because we did it once ... we got zero business from the thing....

Thanks for your post and comments. I wish there would more similar info available to avoid these situations.
In 2012, Mode PR is still a complete SCAM. Avoid at all cost. They use harassment method and sells lies. Don't waste your time and don't let them intimidate you.

I was recently approached by A Company through cold call, to sell an advertising space for a local community magazine street scene. At first i was very reluctant to advertise with them due to these entire mis sold space buzz in the market, but I was taken by surprise, and was proved wrong when I saw the Magazine it was genuine, and it did make a nice Read, as i asked them to send me the mags over.
Unlike others this company didnt push me for payment, and I was convinced with the artwork and designs they provided me along with all the paperwork in black and white. The Best part was all the paperwork arrived within the promised time duration. The artwork team did a good job and designed a nice piece of work. It was only once I was convinced I called them myself and made the payments and everything was safe, i never had any problem liaising with them
So there are some genuine companies as well, who work hard and do the business in right way its only comes down to you as a person in my opinion to be smart and break the clutter and make the right choice. As advertising with this companys Magazine Has helped me to push my business. Their artwork was just spot on and amazing. I would highly recommend their services .
The main reason why i was particularly inetrested in posting it here , as after reading the previous posts the company i dealt with was mode pr - and i got my services perfect from them, it is sad that few had bad experiences with them but in my opinio i wouldnt call them a scam as i got my artwork right , i got my paperwork to prove it ryte.... and i also got my mags delivered ... so it could be a bad experience for others which i feel sorry for ...

Hi Gregory,

thanks for sharing and welcome to the forum.

There is a general rule of thumb, a bit like anything that can go wrong will go wrong that says bad things are always easier to believe... Actually, that line might also have come from the film Pretty Woman but I digress.

I'm going to pass no comment about this particular company as I've had no experience of them myself but looking at your arguement in favour of Mode (wasn't that the magazine from Ugly Betty?), if you think about it, if a company makes 99,999 good widgets and 1 duff one that caused a major accident with fatalities it is never going to be remembered for the 99,999 good widgets!

In the same way, a dodgy company that cleans up it's act will always be judged on their history rather than what they are doing now.

Hope that the advertising works for you Gregory... I assume that you are in our line of business?

kind regards,

Shaun.
