Sounds like you right to me Nicola, credit then off the Supplier ledgers. As you said if they're been entered via the supplier account and again via the cash journal, they're double countedTony.-- Edited by ADAS on Sunday 5th of September 2010 08:46:11 PM

Income less than expenses but still made a profit???

That's fine with regards to postage and stock sold.

You can split it if you wish but if you are not vat registered then its not too much of an issue. I assume you use royal mail so there isn't any vat of the postage cost anyway to nothing to worry about.

Don't forget that your postage cost not only covers the cost of the stamps or recorded delivery etc.. But it also covers the cost of packaging which I assume you include in your Direct Costs as both Carriage (for the postal costs) and Packaging for the...well packaging.

Just take the £6000 and work out the % at the applicable tax rate. To work it out accurately, work out the tax on £40000 salary and then work it out on £46000 salary. The difference is the tax payable on the BIK.From a rough Calc, the tax would be as follows for the 2010/11 year£3900 @ 20% = 780£2100 @ 40% = 840This is assuming he has a 647L tax code.Class 1A NI payable would be approx £207 (based on 780+840=1620 @ 12.8%)This is always a useful site http://www.ir35calc.co.uk/PAYE_NI_Net_Salary_Tax_Calculator.aspxHope that helps.8)-- Edited by Merlion ABS on Sunday 5th of September 2010 07:47:54 PM

New bookkeeping business

FSB and networking is one of the best ways to go. try to join a few local groups if you can find them. Its difficult as they only allow one person per trade, but I doubt many have bookkeepers and they will most likely have an Accountant on board. always worth enquiring tho.

A few other things.

1) Get yourself some web presence. I can recommend www.wsitopinternetmarketing.co.uk for this as they are very affordable and will get you loads of traffice to your site. Get a Google account and setup google maps and a profile for your business. You can link your website to your Google account and Google will track number fo visitors and keywords etc..

2) Search Google for Business Directories and sign up for all on the 1st page. www.freeindex.co.uk, www.ecademy.com, www.Linkedin.com, www.wecando.biz are just a few sites i'm on and work well for me.

3) Take a look at the www.thebestof.co.uk and click "Find a Town" at the top to locate your local area. This is a brillant site which isnt just a directory. TheBestOf people actively market your business for you for about £30-£40 a month. The local sites will be run be a local person so you get face to face human contact and they will most likely be a member of a local networking group.

4) Approach local accountants to let them know your available if they have too much work.

5) Word of mouth is the best kind of referral, but obviously this take a lot of hard work and will link nicely with networking groups.

A few other points, look at getting Prof Indemnity Insurance and also get registered with the Money Laundering regulation. You can either use the Inland Revenue for about £120 a year i think or use your professional association if they offer it.

Get a logo, letterheads and business cards as you will need business cards at the networking meetings.

Hope that helps a bit and I wish you well in your new venture.

Quick Books Studying

Hi Karen,

I am a Quickbooks users I have Pro 2008, and I must say that their support is rubbish to say the least, lets just say the people on the other end are not bookkeepers or accountants and are just call centre people with very little knowledge, I gave up using the support long ago!
The book they send is very basic and dosen't really teach you much at all. You would be better off joining a forum with QB advisors on it. If you google it there are a few about that have professional people there to answer questions via e-mail, the one I used (can't remember which one now) is free. There is always this site off course. The one thing I will say about it it is very user friendly unlike SAGE! Although saying that if you are use to sage you will find QB very easy to use. I use SAGE instants and QB's.

B190 Introduction to Bookkeeping and accounting

Sorry for the late reply Andrew. Its been manic this end!I was suppose to start the course in February but the course materials came in December. There were some hicups with the course materials but I wont go into that. You have to complete an end of course assesment and get it submitted by April to the OU. I submitted mine in March, but did not get my result until June. But all in all it is suppose to be from February until April so not long at all. But as I said you do have to wait a couple of months for the result which is sent via email then letter.I think its worth while if it gains you membership of the IAB.Good luck with it all should you decide to do the course.Take careKaren

Yeah you should be able to as the exams are quite frequent. Premier training hold them every day at their centre, I think kaplan bpp centres are at worst going to be running every month so yeah it's doable if you have the time to study.
